Nancy has very generously let me take over her blog today and when I asked for suggestions on what to blog about she suggested I give my “Call Story” and “Advice for Writers.”

I never get tired of relating my “Call Story” because it proves beyond a doubt that truth really is stranger than fiction!

It actually started in an elevator at the 2006 RWA conference in Atlanta. My roommate and I were on the 20th floor. One morning when we got in the elevator to go to breakfast, a man and a woman were already in the elevator. The woman introduced herself as an editor. She noticed the Golden Heart Finalist ribbon on my name badge, and asked about my Golden Heart manuscript. I told her it was a romantic suspense and she said she would really like to read it and gave me her business card.

I sent her the manuscript and eventually she rejected it. But since it took her awhile, I sent her a “nudge” email asking for the status of manuscript. While I was at it, I pitched my current work-in-progress.

I distinctly remember when I emailed her because it was Valentine’s Day 2007. Three months to the day later, May 14, 2007, she emailed me and asked for a partial of my WIP. Then on July 27th (see above) she called my house and asked for the full manuscript. My poor DH was so rattled when he answered the phone (I wasn’t home) that he wrote down every word she said because he knew “Cindy will kill me if I screw this up!”

On September 14th at 8:45 am, my phone rang. Since everyone knows better than to call me before nine in the morning, I picked it up expecting bad news. Instead, it was my editor, Deb Werksman calling to say she wanted by buy “my Irish book!” I started screaming and jumping around! My DH wasn’t home, but my two dogs thought I’d gone crazy. I spent the rest of the day phoning and email everyone I knew. I had also planned to meet three friends for lunch that day, so I got to tell them in person and we all screamed and jumped around some more!

It was such a fun day that I swore from then on I would have my major holiday celebration on September 14th. And this year, I celebrated on board a cruise ship!

My advice for writers is this: Keep writing and keep submitting!

There are many things in the publishing business that are beyond the writer’s control, but these two you very definitely can control. As long as you keep writing and keep sending your work out, eventually you will get there! You must believe that and believe in your work.

I also encourage all writers, but especially beginners to find a good critique partner or group. Getting another (and at least somewhat objective) perspective of your work is invaluable. Finding a good partner or group can be difficult and take some effort, but is well worth it. My first book, The Wild Sight, is out now from Sourcebooks.

Hi, Loucinda–

Thanks for joining me today and sharing this wonderful story. I can’t wait to read The Wild Sight!

Hi Nancy,

Thanx for having me as your guest!

I hope you enjoy reading The Wild Sight, and SUPER CONGRATS on your recent win in The Maggie contest!

It won’t be long before we are talking about your “call story” I’m sure!

AC

Nancy says:

Thanks, AC! It was a huge moment for me.

What do you think helps people persevere?

Nancy

Jo robertson says:

Hi, Cindy, I never get tired of hearing your call story. It’s particularly inspiring to writers who are tempted to give up. That old adage about it being darkest before the dawn is so true.

You’re so right — we can control our writing and our submissions. And we should never give up on those aspects of our career. We also should never take rejections personally. I know that is very difficult, but somewhere, someone will fall in love your writing and your books.

Buffie says:

Hey Ladies!!! Thought I would head on over here and see what is going on.

Cindy, I have heard your call story before, but so enjoy reading it again. It is such a great story. Well, I guess all call stories are, aren’t they?!

So does this mean that you will celebrate every book sale with a cruise? Sounds to me like that is the way to go!!!!!

Hey, AC! You’re everywhere! I love it! I also love the call story. Gosh, they do like to make those Calls early, don’t they? Mine came at around that time of the morning too. :>

I can’t agree more about persevering and writing forward. Even now, I feel like I get better with each page I write. And if you get better, you sell. Grins.

Can’t wait to read The Wild Sight in its final form!

Buffie says:

Hey Nancy — I just read your “about Nancy” link. Great, great stuff in there. And I find it fascinating that your husband is a childrens literature professor. Maybe one day he can give you some insights for childrens books and pass them on to me :) While I am not an aspiring romance writer, I do have a childrens book series splashing around in my head. The hubby keeps telling me to get it on paper, but I just feel like I don’t know where to begin. Guess I need to narrow down the age group I want to target.

PJ says:

I never tire of reading your call story, AC but it makes me cry every darn time! lol!

Huge congrats on the release of THE WILD SIGHT. It hasn’t shown up in my local store yet (Grrrrr) and I wasn’t able to make it to the bookstore while in Atlanta…BUT…I’m going to Charlotte tomorrow so a trip to B&N is definitely on the agenda!

Hugs,
~PJ

Hey, Nancy and Cindy, my fellow Banditas! Nancy, first off, huge congratulations to you for winning the Maggie. That’s a huge achievement and I’ve been cheering for you ever since I heard. Brava, Bandita!

Cindy, congratulations on the Wild Sight hitting the bookstores. Sounds like you’ve got a hit on your hands, my friend! Can’t wait to read it! I love your call story – it’s such a classic!

Fedora says:

Hi, AC! Very fun to read your call story again–persevering is hard to do, but obviously pays off! Yay!! And congrats again, Nancy! What a thrill! :)

Helen says:

Hi All

Aunty Cindy I never tire of hearing that story I love it.
I am so happy for you and am eagerly awaiting my copy of The Wild Sight to arrive so as I can read it hopefully I will get it soon.

Nancy
Huge congrats to you on the Maggie and I hopefully will be reading one of your books very soon as well.

Have Fun
Helen

Tawny Weber says:

Cindy, I love your call story :-) I’m so thrilled for you!!!

and Nancy, another woot for you, too with the awesome Maggie win :-) Way to rock it, Bandita Sisters!!

Hey, it’s a Bandita Raid! YAY!

Par-Tay!!!

Thanks everyone, for the congrats and I sincerely hope you all enjoy reading THE WILD SIGHT. But if you don’t like it, PLEASE DON’T TELL ME! LOL! Rejections really are hard to take!

Nancy, you asked what I think it takes to persevere. I honestly don’t know. In my case, maybe I was just too stubborn to know when to quit! :-P Actually, I ran across a quote that expresses it perfectly for me: “I write for the same reason I breathe — because if I didn’t, I would die.” Issac Asimov

Nancy says:

Thanks for stopping by, everybody! Jo, I sometimes wonder if we exercise the control that we could. Do we work to improve the writing itself? Do we pay attention to market factors? Not that I’m saying we should write to the market, but I think keeping an eye on it is wise.

Buffie, I think the “celebrate every sale with a cruise” idea sounds great. AC takes lots of wonderful trips, of course, but I can’t imagine she’d object to a special one. :-) Glad you like what you found on my site. I’m still building and hope to have more when I conquer scanner phobia and can upload some of my older travel photos. You should definitely write the children’s book idea down. It’s a tough market, but aren’t they all, these days? Email me, and I’ll ask him for pointers.

Jeanne, I’m not a morning person, but I’d wake up to take that call!

PJ, I haven’t seen the book, either. I may have to special order it. So ditto on the “Grrr” part.

Anna, Helen, Fedora and Tawny, thanks again for the Maggie congrats. I’ve worn the medallion all day, and I periodically look down at it, just to see it in place. A friend brought a cord to the ceremony in case I won, so I have it on that. I think I’d like to have a necklace, though, for dressier occasions.

Hey Aunty and Nancy!

Had to pop by to say hello and to congratulate both of you!!

And Aunty Cindy I LOVE your call story! Especially the part about the poor DH writing down every single word of the message! Too funny! I can just imagine the looks on your dogs’ faces! Mine had that look when I got my Golden Heart finalist call and after I scared the dogs and the cats I went out and scared the neighbor’s cows!! I can’t wait to get my hands on The Wild Sight. Cruising the bookstores tomorrow as it is my day off.

I like what you said – Keep writing and it will happen. I will try to get control of that right away! LOL
Nancy, I am so truly thrilled about your Maggie win. I haven’t been able to even final in that one. Everyone says it is one of the toughest and here you go and WIN IT!!! I bow to your superior brain and talent!! And DEFINITELY go for the chain!

I’m late, but I’m here. Cindy, congrats again on your debut. And I totally agree with this advice:

“My advice for writers is this: Keep writing and keep submitting!”

Eilis Flynn says:

I love “call stories,” and I especially like them when they’re a bit like a roller-coaster — from rejection to success! Congratulations!

And congratulations, Nancy!

Thanks again to everyone with their good wishes!

Buffie, if I have MY way, I most certainly will celebrate every anniversary of The Call with a cruise. I’ve never had a bad time on a cruise yet!

PJ, sorry you still haven’t run down a copy of TWS. Talk about perseverance! Be sure to send me your snail mail addy so I can send you a signed book plate. Same goes for anyone else who wants one.

BIG MWAH to Nancy and her Maggie Medallion! ;-) Thanx for hosting me on your blog.

AC

Nancy says:

Thanks for stopping in, Louisa, Eilis, and Trish, and sharing Cindy’s debut with us. I appreciate all the Maggie good wishes. It really is a dream come true and a huge pat on the back.

Nancy says:

Cindy, it was a pleasure to have you! Best of luck with the book. I can’t wait to read it.

Cassondra Murray says:

Hi Auny! Hi Nancy!

Nancy, I love your website. It has a wonderful feel. I especially love the colors.

Aunty, So sorry this is a day late. I’m a slacker this week. You KNOW I love the call story, and I’m so pleased for your sale, your recent release, and all the success on its way to you! Gives the rest of us hope. I know you had your moments of “it will never happen!” But it did!

Nancy says:

Cassondra, I’m glad you like the site! Come back anytime. :-)
